In My own time

Who sets the pace?

In My Own Time transforms a simple shared activity into a powerful audience encounter. Unfolding one audience member at a time, it quietly challenges our expectations of pace, attention and one another.

Inside the Performance

An artist and audience participant meet across a table to complete a simple shared activity. There is no dialogue. A metronome marks time, but what unfolds is shaped by the exchange between them. Each exchange subtly shifts the work, both for the people at the table and for those watching.

Further possibilities

In My Own Time draws on the form of participatory and durational live art, where the exchange between artist and audience becomes the performance. Presented through a series of one-to-one encounters, the work changes with each new participant. Audiences can take part, encounter it briefly, or stay and observe those subtle shifts over time.

Its small scale also allows it to sit within a wider programme or alongside other works, creating a more intimate encounter within a larger audience experience.

Previously presented at: Manchester Art Gallery, The Whitworth, and DaDa Fest International at Tate Liverpool.

Content & sensory information:  In My Own Time is a participatory live art performance. One audience participant is invited to complete a simple shared activity with the artist. There is no dialogue. A repetitive metronome sound runs throughout the encounter.
